In my first semester at university, I wrote a decidedly disrespectful essay about Aristotle. For this lapse in judgement the senior tutor of my study group gave me a sharp metaphorical rap on the knuckles. “What do you think you’re doing, writing about Aristotle this way?” he demanded. “You’re a first-year undergrad!”

At the time I didn’t appreciate the depth of his outrage or the reason for it. Time and perspective, however, have given me a deep appreciation for Aristotle. When it comes to understanding the world around us, he is the giant upon whose shoulders everyone stands
